What My Nine Year Old Taught Me About Building a Business | Your Coach Colin
Feb 15, 2026
The other day, my nine-year-old fell pretty hard.
No tears.
No drama.
She paused, stood up, said that kind of hurt… and went back to playing.
It made me think.
Because I remember when she was four.
At that age, if she fell on her butt, it was the end of the world. Tears. Screaming. Total meltdown. Even when I knew it didn’t still hurt. And she would emphatically protest, "Yes, it DOES still hurt!"
What was really happening wasn’t pain.
It was surprise.
It was new.
It was unfamiliar.
It was overwhelming.
And that is exactly what early business building feels like.
When You’re New, Everything Feels Huge
If you’re new in business, a lost client can feel devastating.
A deal falling apart can feel personal.
A mistake can sit in your stomach all day long.
You replay it.
You question yourself.
You think, maybe I’m not cut out for this.
But here’s the truth most people don’t say out loud:
It doesn’t feel big because it’s catastrophic.
It feels big because it’s new.
Just like a toddler falling for the first time.
You’re not weak.
You’re inexperienced.
And there’s a difference.
The Goal Isn’t to Stop Falling
My daughter at nine still falls.
She just doesn’t stay captured by the moment as long.
That’s maturity. That’s reps.
In business building, the goal isn’t to eliminate mistakes, rejection, or awkward conversations. Those are part of the job description.
The real skill is shortening your recovery time.
Early on:
-
A bad call ruins your day.
-
A lost client ruins your week.
-
A tough conversation ruins your confidence.
Later on:
-
It stings.
-
You adjust.
-
You move on.
Same event. Different reaction.
That difference is growth.
From Emotional to Analytical
There’s a powerful shift that happens in your career.
At first, everything feels emotional.
Why did they do that?
What did I say wrong?
Why does this always happen to me?
With time, it becomes analytical.
What can I learn?
Where did the process break?
How do I improve the system?
That shift from emotional to analytical is when you start becoming dangerous in this business.
Trust the Process
Early in your career, everything feels significant.
That’s normal.
But if you stay in the game…
If you keep stacking wins…
If you surround yourself with the right guidance…
You’ll wake up one day and realize:
What used to wreck you now barely slows you down.
Not because the business got easier.
But because you got stronger.
A Question for You
How long does it take you to recover from a setback right now?
A day?
A week?
A month?
That number matters more than you think.
If you’re early in building your business and everything still feels big, you’re not broken. You’re just new.
And new turns into seasoned faster than you realize (assuming if you don’t quit!).
If you want help shortening your recovery time and building real resilience in your business, let’s talk.
